Caleb Byers has secured the inaugural TA2NZ Championship after a composed and commanding performance at the final round of the season during the Taupō Supercars event. Entering the weekend in a tight title fight with three championship contenders still mathematically in contention, Byers delivered when it mattered most to seal the title in emphatic fashion.
Byers set the pace from the outset, topping both Friday practice sessions by a clear margin at Taupō International Motorsport Park. With a compressed Supercars schedule, TA2 qualifying was held later that afternoon, where traffic on his quickest lap denied him pole position for Race One. Even so, his performance throughout the day underlined the speed and consistency that had defined his championship campaign.
In Saturday’s race, Byers made an assertive start and claimed the lead into Turn One before controlling the contest from the front. He went on to take victory by eight seconds, a clinical drive that not only capped a standout weekend but also secured the championship by 21 points. The result confirmed Byers as the first-ever TA2NZ champion, a milestone achievement in what has been a breakthrough season.
The weekend was cut short after the threat of Cyclone Vaianu forced organisers to cancel Sunday’s scheduled track action on safety grounds. While the revised programme brought an early end to the event, Byers had already done enough to secure the title and close out the championship in memorable style.
